Salty
“A small bird with a loud idea about every picnic on this beach.”
Salty was a turnstone who worked the tideline below the pier with the air of a shopkeeper inspecting a delivery. He knew exactly which benches produced crumbs and at what hour, and he arrived two minutes early. In winter, when the beach emptied, he would hop along the waterline beside whoever was walking, never close enough to be caught, never far enough to be alone. The regulars still save him a crust, out of habit more than hope.

I still bring two crusts. Old habits are hard to break.
He was here every morning at six. The tideline seems very long now.
Some things are easier to say later. Seal a letter for Salty and choose the day it opens — it stays unread until then, even from this side of the garden.
