Drift
“She never met a wave she did not argue with, and she never lost one.”
Drift was a scruffy terrier with one ear up and a permanent opinion about the tide. Every morning she would wait for the first breaker, bark at it as if it had been rude to her personally, and then chase it all the way back out. She collected stones, dropped them in the shallows, and came home smelling of salt and triumph. The family still walks to the third groynes, which is where she always stopped to look back and check they were coming.
