Coral
“Fourteen years of wet paws and a heart that never once came in from the sea.”
Coral was a yellow labrador who believed the ocean was invented for her personally. She would sprint the last twenty metres of the beach road and hit the water at full speed, then paddle out past the breakers as if she had somewhere to be. On the way home she slept in the footwell with sand in her ears for a week. The family still walks that stretch at low tide, and still says her name when the first wave comes in.
Pictures of Coral, kept by the person who raised this memorial.

The tide came in today and I half expected you to come out of it, shaking everywhere.
Best swimmer on this beach. Never lost a stick, never brought back the right one.
Some things are easier to say later. Seal a letter for Coral and choose the day it opens — it stays unread until then, even from this side of the garden.
